Below are hazards present on an unprotected Engine in a potentially explosive atmosphere.
Any unprotected electronic and electrical equipment can create dangerous sparks and ignite a hazardous environment.
Other rotating parts can create mechanically generated sparks or can even build up static charges, such as the drive belt.
Unburnt particles can create sparks or even a flame at the exhaust, which could instantly ignite an explosive atmosphere.
Surface temperatures of engines and generators are well over the ignition temperatures of explosive gasses.
The starter motor creates sparks in normal operation and will ignite a hazardous atmosphere.
